According to the story, clearing of the rain forest is being “spurred by heavy market demand for corn, soy and cattle.” The story — nay, almost any story you read about environmental rape — does not make the connection between the increased market demand and increasing world and local population … lest we insult someone’s mother, or question the beliefs of a culture dominated by procreation-obsessed Roman Catholicism.

Down in the story, is this bit of irony: The coordinator of Greenpeace’s Amazon campaign “said corn is increasingly being grown in the Amazon because of high international prices brought on by U.S. President George W. Bush’s decision to promote use of corn-based ethanol.” Thus the slashing and burning to create crop land in Brazil while U.S. forces slash and burn Iraq to protect our oil supply.

Thanks for the feedback. I love your site, by the way - security/anti-security/security-theatre is a hobby interest of mine.
